Schedule ServiceWhy Battery Service is Important?
Sometimes it isn’t easy to figure out the problem on your own, but there are some things that can help you get an idea of what the problem might be. Unless you are a technician yourself, the best way to know what is going on with your vehicle is through a thorough inspection and a diagnostic test at Prescott Honda.
What is Wrong with My Car?
If there is a problem getting your vehicle to start, the likely cause is your battery or a problem with the ignition and starting system. Here are some examples:
- Drained battery but otherwise healthy: This is the best you can hope for because if this is the problem, it is a simple fix. A jumpstart should get you going again and there shouldn’t be any additional problems. If there is, then there may be another issue.
- Old battery that won’t keep a charge: If you charge the battery and get where you want to go, but the next time you start it is dead again, or if it dies again after you start, it is probably time to get a new battery.
- Starting system issues: If it is not your battery at all. then the problem lies with the starter system. There is likely some sort of mechanical problem that is preventing your vehicle from starting, draining your battery or keeping your battery from charging as you drive.
If a jump start doesn’t fix the problem, have your battery professionally tested. If the battery is healthy, then a diagnostic test should reveal the problem which may begin with your starter and alternator.
If the Battery isn’t the Problem, Then What?
If your vehicle won’t start with a fully charged battery, the usual suspects are the starter, the alternator, the starter relay, ignition switch, your spark plugs or fuses. It may be a good idea to check your cables or the terminals and clean them up so that current is traveling properly. If the post or the cables are dirty or corroded, it can limit the flow of electricity to the electrical system and starter system. The best way to confirm whether your battery is bad is to test it with a voltmeter. When you bring your vehicle into Prescott Honda, that is the first thing we will check to rule out other problems.
